The many benefits of science fair projects

Science fair projects have many benefits for the student. And because of these benefits, they are great to implement to a curriculum for students. Science is a subject that many enjoy, and the science fair projects help to make science even more enjoyable.

The primary benefit of science fair projects is that students can have fun while they are learning. When students read textbooks or sit in on lectures, they are sometimes less willing to learn because they aren’t enjoying the process. If you think about it – when you enjoy doing something , you are excited about it – and you want to learn about it as opposed to being forced to learn about it. So the science fair project offers the unique opportunity of giving students something that excites them which at the same time allows them to become more educated about some aspect of science.

Another major benefit to science fair projects is that it promotes creativity. So much of today’s classroom learning is focused on the same teaching of the year before. It doesn’t offer new information or allow the students to implement their own ideas into what they are learning. Creativity allows students to expand their minds, and science fair projects do just this because the student decides on critical aspects of the science project that they are working on.

Lastly, competition is a major part of certain science projects. Often a classroom will give each student a science project and at the end of the project, the classroom can decide which project won. This type of healthy competition can be good for students while preparing them for the real world. An example of a science fair project could be a classroom that allows all of its students to make a bridge out of toothpicks. Each student will be allowed the same amount of toothpicks and glue so that everyone has the same opportunity. At the end of the project, a weight will be placed on each bridge to see which one collapses. Slowly, the weight will be increased and by the end, we are able to see which bridge can hold the most weight. This type of interactive experience for a classroom promotes competition in a good way by showing students that hard work and successful creativity can lead to great things.
